Why did you decide to move to Portugal?

After spending two weeks in Portugal earlier this year, I realized that I felt more aligned with a European lifestyle. My observation is that there is a higher standard of excellence in how people look out for each other in everyday communal interactions, better access to live a healthy life, and an overall beauty of the physical environment both in nature and architecture. Experiencing this aligns better with the person I wish to become and the experience I had been having in the US for the last couple years. I was in a period of transition after my most recent job concluded when I decided to pursue a Master's of Sociology in Lisbon to advance in my professional and educational trajectory. I am motivated by learning how to express my ideas better and substantively by learning in an international environment, beyond my previous education solely in the United States. After ten years of professional experience in education access, I have developed observations and entrepreneurial ideas that I believe I can test and explore more fully by living in Portugal and learning from this Master's program.

My parents also decided to move to Portugal as they enter retirement. Our shared decision reflects our collective goal to live in a place that would allow us to afford the cost of everyday life better, while embracing values in connection and healthy living.

When you first decided on Portugal, what did you imagine day-to-day life would feel like, and how does your current routine in Lisbon compare?

When I first decided to move to Portugal, I imagined it would take a similar structure to the routines I’ve created in other cities. Wherever I live, I need to find my favorite grocery stores, a workout studio, a chiropractor, a walking trail with nature, a singing community, a place for social dancing, and room to try new experiences. My current routine in Lisbon has all the components I need to feel healthy and grounded.

Beyond the two-week visit and your parents’ move, what were the top three factors that convinced you Portugal, and Lisbon specifically, was the right next step?

Lisbon has a reputation as an artist’s city, recognizing nostalgia (saudade) and attracting talent from all over the world, all things I value. Since being here, I’ve found opportunities everywhere to take myself more seriously in my career, in human connection, and in the arts. I’ve felt invited at every corner to boldly embrace my own potential. In contrast, my experience in the States often involved a culture of defending one’s comfort zone and indulging doubt, which I believe holds people back from leveraging their strengths and living a fulfilled, happy life. I’d be remiss not to acknowledge that I’ve been part of those beliefs myself, and I work every day to free myself from them.

  1. Career – I had spent months job-seeking after my last full time project, and despite some very positive interviews and lovely rejection letters, I wasn't landing a full-time role in the States. It all felt like a sign that maybe I should try a new place and see if my skills and personality fit better in Lisbon. I took a leap of faith, applied to one Master’s in Sociology program, and got in. It became clear that this was a chance to study and share my ideas about the structures that help people live enthusiastically in their purpose — from sales teams to circle singing.
  2. Human Connection – In my experience, many environments in the States have become quite transactional and devoid of connection. That shows up in subtle ways in daily interactions. My experience in Europe has been full of lovely serendipitous surprises. As I write this at Honest Greens, the man reading at the table next to me noticed I didn’t have silverware. When he went to get his, he grabbed a set for me too. Moments like that may seem small, but to me they are reminders to be giving and look out for each other.
  3. Arts and Culture – I’ve always had a passion for singing and Latin dance, and I knew Lisbon was an artist’s city with international talent I could get involved in. I always try to place myself in rooms with people who celebrate the courage to be vulnerable, who have integrity about wanting to improve, and who honor the humanity of their fellow artists.

How did you choose your Master’s program in Portugal?

I looked for Master’s programs in Sociology taught in English, and ISCTE was one of the only options with a feasible deadline.

From submitting at Newark’s Consular Post to visa approval, how long did each stage take? Where did bottlenecks happen, and what stood out about the Newark consulate?

I got into my Master's program at the end of May, submitted my application the last week of June, had my appointment on July 15, got my visa stamped on August 25, and flew to Lisbon on August 29. I was probably very lucky because student visas usually take longer, but my caseworker asked them to rush it since it depended on my student status.

Which D4 documents or requirements were unexpectedly difficult, and how did you handle them?

Proving I had $12,500 was the hardest part. I had to get creative to “shake the money tree,” so to speak. I can share more about how I solved for this with you privately — just not in writing.

How did you plan housing, banking, and health coverage for arrival week in Lisbon, and what would you do differently?

For health coverage, I used Schengen travel insurance. For banking, I opened an account with Caixa Geral de Depósitos — they come to the school and help you sign up.

How did you budget for tuition, cost of living, and setup costs? Any tools or rules of thumb that proved realistic?

My budget is €1500 a month. Tuition is less than $4k total for the two years, which is minimal compared to anything in the US.

What helped you build a life quickly? What felt hardest socially or culturally at first?

Time reveals who is a reliable friend, versus an exciting new person to meet. There is no such thing as fast friends.

There are many familiar faces between the Master’s program, workouts, dance classes, and choir. It takes effort to build connection after class, then consistency to build trust.

Today is a good example: I made a new friend from my ballet-fit class; we realized we’re both from New Jersey and see each other weekly, so we sat by the river and talked. Later, I met up with a new friend from choir because we both have an interest in becoming facilitators for vocal improvisation.

Learning Portuguese is the hardest part because it requires patience, There are two worlds here it seems: the international english-speaking people and local Portuguese people. I want to experience Portugal culture and have Portuguese friends so it’s important to improve my language skills. I recommend A1 level at the Lisbon Language Cafe and 1:1 tutoring from Preply.

I met my first friend, Ann, a local tour guide, at a Brazilian nail salon. I met one of my most influential friends at a dance social because I noticed his dance skill from across the room. I have become close with my French roommate, Flora, in the last couple weeks as I am 3 months into my life here. It takes time to build something worthwhile.

What do you wish you’d known about Portuguese bureaucracy, services, or everyday norms before moving?

You can’t leave Portugal while you’re waiting for your AIMA appointment. Everything that you think will be a quick process is slow, outdated, and disorganized process. I accidentally put in the wrong code to the ATM machine so it took my card and cancelled it. Then, I couldn’t access my money for a week even though I spoke with multiple bank tellers for support. That kind of example happens all of the time.

What do you wish you’d known about packing, shipping, timelinesor phone/bank/lease setup before departure?

I got rid of a lot but still had four suitcases. I wish I had brought more comfort items. I had to re-buy winter clothes because I couldn’t fit them.

Why did you choose AnchorLess, when did you involve them, and what advantages did you experience?

My parents were using AnchorLess, so it made sense to streamline my process. I didn’t have connections in Portugal when this began, so AnchorLess bridged the gap with lawyer reviews, familiarity with the process, and offering local know-how related to country norms and language.

Have you noticed improvements in your lifestyle after moving to Portugal? Which ones?

Yes! Fresher foods and more walking has me feeling very good in my body. I’m also more courageous and confident all around because I’ve seen myself navigate countless new situations - from learning public transport in a new country, to taking the stage to sing at an open mic poetry slam.

Overall, there seems to be a change in my beliefs because I have had to be so driven to create enjoyable life systems quickly. I embrace each day as a gift and honor it being open to who I can meet (or spend time with) and what I can build with them using what we have available to us right now, as we are.
