Are you relocating to Portugal and trying to figure out how your fitness lifestyle can adapt to your new life? Or maybe you just made the move and are feeling the need to balance all the pasteis de nata in a healthier way.

Either way, you need to know how to navigate gym and fitness life in Portugal, and you'll learn all the basics right here.

No matter where you live, whether you are a senior citizen or a new nomad, we've got you covered in this article on how to stay fit in Portugal and how to navigate gym life here.

Is Portugal a healthy or fit country?

Yes and no!

The diet is definitely balanced and can be considered healthy by some standards, with plenty of fresh produce, artisanal bread, fresh seafood, and reliable livestock.

However, when it comes to fitness and exercising, Portugal doesn't perform that well compared to other countries in the EU, according to research.

Is it easy to find gyms in Portugal?

Actually, it is quite easy.

There are small gyms or large franchises in cities across the country, and even if you end up in a remote village with a reduced population and no gyms, keep in mind that this is a country with short distances, and your closest gym may be just a 20- or 30-minute bus ride away.

What types of gyms can I find in Portugal?

There is a broad range of options, and their availability depends on the size of the town in which you are located. There is no Anytime Fitness in Portugal, but you may find similar options in larger areas.

1.Regular gyms in Portugal

Regular gyms in Portugal are similar to the ones found in other modern countries (like Anytime Fitness). A membership-type contract with lockers and several pieces of equipment for cardio, strength training, and sometimes specialized classes like yoga, pilates, or crossfit, among others.

You may need to bring a few necessary items, such as towels, and if you are in need of assistance from a personal trainer, you can find it only by paying a fee.

These gyms are usually open from 6 in the morning until 10 in the evening and are commonly available in larger cities.

2.Premium gyms in Portugal

Premium gyms will have similar conditions as regular gyms, but the equipment will be top-notch, you'll have all your needs catered to (like towels!), and facilities will have exclusive services, such as spas or saunas. The price is premium as well.

Instructors tend to be available in these gyms, not to fully accompany you but to guide you in the execution of exercises, or creating your fitness plan.

3.Studio gyms in Portugal

Studio gyms are reduced-size gyms, usually quite complete in equipment, but in smaller quantities and in a smaller space when compared to regular gyms.

The studios tend to have instructors available to assist and guide you through your exercises, and due to their reduced size, they won't be too full.

Some studios can be available 24 hours a day, though in late-night hours, an instructor may not be available.

4.Crossfit academy in Portugal

Crossfit boxes follow the same pattern as in other countries, with a large open-space area and cross-fit-certified instructors available.

For each establishment, the conditions and availability of equipment vary. In Portugal, crossfit boxes are usually available in populated cities.

5.Pilates and Yoga studios in Portugal

Pilates and yoga studios are usually available in populated cities. It is also possible to find private yoga instructors, even in smaller towns.

The studios tend to offer both private and group sessions, and you can easily schedule an experiential class. The instructors are all certified and present during the classes.

6.Swimming in Portugal

Swimming is one of the easiest fitness options, even in smaller towns.

Swimming classes are often available in municipal pools, and they cover a wide range of age groups. You'll find information about enrolling at a private facility, with a personal instructor, or at your local municipal pool or council.

7.Martial Arts gyms in Portugal

In Portugal, there are a wide range of martial arts academies, usually in populated cities.

Jiu-jitsu and judo are the most easily found and sought-after; however, you can find specialized classes of other modalities in larger cities.

8.Outdoor activities in Portugal

Portugal, as a coastal and sunny country, also offers several outdoor activities in which you can dismiss a formal instructor (or enroll in classes guided by an instructor!).

In coastal areas, you can easily find clubs that offer classes on acquatic sports such as surfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding, among others.

Facebook groups will have local options for runners, cyclists, football, rugby, or volleyball players, among other activities.

9.Dance studios in Portugal

Dance studios in Portugal may be considered limited or below expectations, depending on where you are coming from. Larger cities often have studios for ballet, jazz, contemporary, and other segments available.

However in less populated areas there is a lack of offer.

10.Spinning studios in Portugal

Larger areas, such as Lisbon and Porto, will have spinning studios available, though there is no Soul Cycle in Portugal.

⚠️ You'll find similar options available in these two areas; however, in other cities, you may only find classes available with regular or premium gym memberships.

How do gyms work in Portugal?

Generally speaking, all gyms operate on a membership contract that charges your bank account either monthly or weekly, with prices that can go from 2,99 euros weekly, to 150 euros monthly, and is valid while payments are being made.

Premium gyms and studio gyms may also offer contracts that require a 30-day notice when finalizing activities.

Regular gyms are usually budget-friendly, while premium and studio gyms tend to have a higher ticker. However, you'll find a specialized service among the last two, as regular gyms may lack human resources or features, even though they will have a complete range of equipment. Regular gyms are frequently more crowded.

⚠️ 24-hour gyms are available in large cities such as Lisbon and Porto, or in smaller towns, with studios, upon accordance with the personal trainers.

Which are the best options for gyms in Portugal?

When it comes to premium gyms, the following options are available:

For budget-friendly options, you'll find:

⚠️ There are several other options, however those are the nationally known options.

Still in doubt? Here what other expats have to say about gyms in Portugal

Fitness Hut might be the most popular ‘low-cost’ gym in Portugal, as they are located in every major city and most of the time offer competitive prices. The quality of the gyms in itself leaves somewhat to be desired, mainly when we’re referring to the machines and locker rooms. It’s a viable option if you’re looking to not spend too much.

The gym membership at Club 7 is on the higher side, but if you're under 26, it's only €88 instead of over €150. Over the summer, the gym underwent renovations, resulting in its impeccable condition. It offers a sauna, hammam, pool, CrossFit, and paddle tennis. There's also a restaurant, and you can work from the club. I highly recommend it if it's within your budget.

M.

---

As a decent gym I wouldn’t recommend Fitness Hut, especially if you’re looking for a gym that’s not too crowded during rush hour. However, it’s still the cheapest option (I’ve already tried it, and it’s complicated after 5 p.m.). And during the summer, the fitness hut is a nightmare; the air conditioning works badly, so when it's crowded, it feels so hot. Honestly, the only good thing about this gym is the price. While Solinca is comparable to Fitness Hut, it is more expensive and may offer additional facilities, depending on the specific gym. There are also prenium gyms with more services, such as a sauna, padel, etc., that are less crowded, but the price is much higher! Holmes Place and Club 7 are available. Academia Life Club is also a great gym; a friend has been there; the location is very nice on the waterfront; and they offer outdoor classes.

Compared to France, Portugal is much more expensive for budget gyms but much more affordable for “luxury” gyms. Overall, the gyms are pretty great, though not as numerous as one might have imagined.

The Supera chain in Portugal, namely the location in Avenida de Roma in Lisbon, is a great option in terms of price and quality. They have great spaces, with a pool and sauna, offering a wide range of classes and sports in a very local and ‘neighbourhood’ environment. Their biggest drawback, in my opinion, is the lack of additional locations.

G.

---

Powerlift Studio is one of the most welcoming gyms. Very friendly and helpful staff. There are a limited number of high-quality machines available. The only negative point is that at peak times, it can get a little complicated with space, but since it works 24 hours a day, it just goes at a quieter time, which is fantastic.

R.

---

Gymnasium is, in general, a nice place to train, offers a large and well-equipped space, and is always renewing the training machines. The variety and quantity of equipment is one of its strengths, allowing for diversified and complete training for all levels of practitioners. In addition, the gym stands out for offering many group classes, which are beneficial both for those who like to train in groups and for those who seek more motivation and dynamism in their training routines. The bathing area is well structured but could improve the cleaning standard. Considering the peak time, especially after 6 p.m., when the gym tends to get extremely crowded, during this period, it becomes almost impossible to train comfortably because too many people can hinder access to equipment and compromise the quality of training. If you're willing to train during this period, it's crucial to consider this factor when determining whether the gym is the best option for you.

A.

Without a doubt, Element offers the most favorable price point, with 2,99 euros wekkely charge. It is an extremely low-cost gym for what it offers. There is a good variety of appliances, and the space is quite generous. The downside of being very low-cost is that a large number of people go at peak times, and it gets complicated mainly with cable machines. However, during quieter periods, the experience is truly delightful.

R.

---

Fitness Up is an incredible gym, with plenty of space and a wide range of machines. This, combined with the affordable price, makes it one of the best gyms in Faro. The negative point is that the weekend schedules are very reduced.

R.

---

Mind Set Studio is ideal for those who enjoy a peaceful training experience. It is very clean, fragrant, and well maintained, and the staff is very friendly. You can do a workout without complications even at the "peak" times, because even these times are never fully full. The only drawback is its small size and limited selection of machines, but it still provides all the necessary equipment. The fact that it works 24 hours a day is also something very positive, especially for those who have a routine that is more out of the ordinary.

What if I don't want to go to a gym in Portugal to stay active?

Portugal has several other fitness options to stay active and invest in a healthy lifestyle.

The most sought-after and available are listed below.

Football in Portugal

The country's biggest passion! There are several football schools available in Portugal, as well as several opportunities to play amateur.

You can usually find where and how through Facebook groups, as many options come from non-commercial initiatives, or directly at local fields.

Team sports in Portugal

Rugby, volleyball, footvolley, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and hockey (not on ice!)—you can find plenty of options either with local clubs or in Facebook groups.

Each group's needs determine enrollment and availability.

Golfing in Portugal

Portugal is a golfing reference, and if you live near a golf course, you can easily head to your local club, enroll in classes, or hire a tee time at the green.

Horse-riding in Portugal

Historically, Portugal has been a horse-loving country, with its own breed called Lusitano. In larger areas, there are several hip-hop schools where you can easily enroll to train or learn. Stables will have horses available, including for new learners.

In rural zones, you can try private classes with locals.

Tennis or Padel in Portugal

There are several tennis courts available in Portugal, and you can either enroll in classes or schedule a time directly at their office or website.

Padel has gained popularity in Portugal, and regular gyms may have courts available, particularly in larger areas, or you can find speciallized gyms.

Hiking or Trekking in Portugal

Portugal has a wide variety of hiking and walking trails available for exploration. You have the option to go for a relaxing walk or a more demanding hike.

Portugal is part of the Camino de Santiago walk, and this is a great way to see everything up close and personal.

Some areas will offer challenging activities, depending on their geography. Usually, mountainous areas will be your getaway for a good trail.

Trekking in Portugal has been disappointing for us. We've tried several trails, only to end up walking on roads every time. Compared to other countries, Portugal hasn't won me over when it comes to trekking. M.

What if I want to workout at home in Portugal?

You can easily find equipment either in large supermarkets, at Amazon (amazon.es caters to Portugal), or at Decathlon for a low-cost option. The latter is available throughout the country.

Keep in mind that Portugal has a small area, and an online purchase will usually arrive in a few short days. E-commerce makes it easy to find equipment to improve your health at home.

What if I want to hire a personal trainer in Portugal?

Personal trainers are available for hiring in Portugal, with hourly rates going between 50 and 90 euros.

Some personal trainers also offer group sessions in public locations, such as parks, where they will take the equipment. Groups can range from a few individuals to several dozen, depending on the professional.

There are no official regulators regarding the presence of external PT's in gyms; the ideal is to always check with your local gym to see what their policy is.

How can I find personal trainers to hire in Portugal?

There are varied options! You can try Upwork or other specialized websites, such as Personal Trainers Portugal.

Just like in other areas of Portuguese society, a great option is to search within local Facebook groups (or request an indication), such as those in your area.

Are there any fitness apps in Portugal?

Yes, they exist!

Portugal has a few apps that allow you to access gyms or classes; they work as a B2C primary version of Gympass.

Apps like TrainAway or Class App allow you to access varied gyms or exercise classes without enrolling in particular gyms and offer reduced values.

⚠️ Wellhub (former Gympass) is available only in a couple smaller towns at the moment in Portugal.

The ClassApp works as a virtual agenda for a number of clubs and fitness centers, mainly in Lisbon, to which you pay a subscription based on credits that you then use when and where you desire, offering reformer pilates, cycling, yoga, cross-fit, and many other forms of exercise other than the typical gym. It’s a wonderful option if you like exploring more options and are exhausted of the gym routine. G.

Are there any fitness retreats in Portugal?

Several!

From North to South, there are several options for a healthy and fit getaway. While most retreats focus on yoga activities, you can also easily find hiking, walking, and cycling retreats, among many other activities, year-round.

Final words

You don't need to worry about maintaining a fitness lifestyle in Portugal. Gyms are available throughout the whole country in varied shapes and sizes, and as a sunny country, you can easily find fantastic alternatives even when living remotely. Portugal is a world to be explored, and you can do it while exercising.
