Lisbon Cost of Living for Expats (2026): Housing, Food, Utilities

lisbon cost of living expats

Lisbon cost of living is easiest to understand in one sentence: day-to-day expenses are manageable, but rent is the line item that decides your budget. As of February 2026, Numbeo’s estimates put Lisbon at ~€736/month for a single person (excluding rent) and ~€2,637/month for a family of four (excluding rent).

Housing is where the range opens up fast. Numbeo’s current averages show a 1-bedroom at ~€1,367 in the city centeror ~€1,023 outside the center, while 3-bedroom rents average ~€2,559 (center) and ~€1,655 (outside). On the market side, Idealista’s index continues to flag Lisbon as the country’s priciest rental city, with asking rents around €22.1/m² (early Jan 2026 reporting on end-2025 levels).

Once rent is set, most other costs are relatively predictable: basic utilities for a typical apartment average ~€152/month on Numbeo, and the Navegante Metropolitano monthly pass is €40 for Lisbon’s metro area. In expat communities (Reddit/Facebook), the recurring theme isn’t just “prices,” it’s the rental experience: competition, upfront payment requests, and scam listings on classifieds sites.

In this guide, we’ll break down Lisbon expenses category by category: rent, bills, groceries, transport, eating out, childcare, healthcare, and lifestyle, so you can build a realistic monthly budget before you commit to a neighborhood.

What is the average cost of living in Lisbon?

Average monthly living costs (excluding rent) in Lisbon are about €736 for a single person and €2,637 for a family of four (these are baseline monthly expenses from a large price database).

With rent included, the “average monthly” total often lands around €1,760-€2,155 for one person (depending on area) and €4,292-€5,196 for a family

We will dive further into it!

How much do you expect to pay for rent?

For an apartment in Lisbon, you can expect to pay roughly:

Type of accommodation Central (city centre) Outer (outside centre / suburbs)
One-bedroom apartment €1,210 avg (≈ €800–€1,660) €930 avg (≈ €750–€1,200)
Two-bedroom apartment €1,700–€2,400 (est.) €1,250–€1,800 (est.)
Room in shared apartment (per person) €450–€650 (listing snapshot) €350–€500 (listing snapshot)

In expat communities, people frequently report intense competition for housing and recommend budgeting a buffer for deposits/guarantors and acting fast on listings.

What are the living expenses for a single person?

single person typically faces estimated monthly costs around €736 excluding rent for living in Lisbon (average “expenses” baseline).

Adding typical rent, many single-person budgets end up around €1,759/month (outside center) to €2,155/month (city center), using the same “average cost” dataset for rent.

What is the cost of living for a family?

family of four has estimated monthly costs around €2,637 excluding rent for living in Lisbon (average baseline).

With rent added, many families land around €4,292/month (3-bed outside center) to €5,196/month (3-bed city center) on the same dataset.

Child-related “expenses” can also vary widely; one reference point is private preschool around €535/month and international primary school around €14,212/year. Public school is free.

What is the minimum wage in Lisbon?

Lisbon doesn’t have a separate statutory minimum: the minimum wage is national. The Portuguese Government announced the 2026 minimum wage at €920/month (gross).

An important context for affordability is that Portugal commonly uses 14 annual payments for wages, and some EU comparisons convert to 12-payment equivalents.

The gap between salary (especially for many Portuguese citizens) and housing-heavy cost of living is why Lisbon can be “cheap vs London” yet still feel tight locally.

How does Lisbon compare to other cities?

Compared with other major cities in European countries, Lisbon is often cheaper than London on headline cost of living metrics (excluding rent and including rent), but purchasing power is also lower.

Compared with Berlin, Berlin’s cost of living is typically higher excluding rent, while rents can be similar depending on the period measured.

In other words, Lisbon can look “affordable” in a Europe-wide comparison, yet still feel expensive relative to local incomes (see minimum wage below).

Final thoughts

Lisbon provides a rich cultural experience and high quality of life for residents, though it is the most expensive city in Portugal.

With a range of rental and property options, the city offers options for a range of budgets.
