What is a codice fiscale, and how is it calculated?
The codice fiscale is Italy's tax code: 16 letters and digits that identify you to the Italian administration, from a bank account to a lease. It is built from your surname, your given names, your date of birth, your sex and your place of birth, then a check letter. For someone born abroad, the place is the country's code: Z and three digits, such as Z404 for the United States.
- You can work it out from your details, as the calculator above does.
- It is only valid once the Italian authorities attribute it to you.
- When other people share your details, the Agenzia changes some characters: yours can differ.

How is the codice fiscale calculated?
A ministerial decree of 23 December 1976 sets the rules. Each part of the 16 characters comes from one of your details, in this order:
| Characters | From | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Your surname: its first three consonants; vowels, then X, if it has fewer | JHN |
| 4 to 6 | Your given names: the 1st, 3rd and 4th consonants if there are 4 or more; else as the surname | MYR |
| 7 and 8 | The last two digits of your year of birth | 92 |
| 9 | Your month of birth, as a letter: A, B, C, D, E, H, L, M, P, R, S, T from January to December | D |
| 10 and 11 | Your day of birth; women add 40 | 58 |
| 12 to 15 | Your place of birth: a comune's code, or Z and three digits for a foreign country | Z404 |
| 16 | A check letter, worked out from the first 15 characters | Q |
All your names, in one string
Every given name and every surname counts, read as one string: spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are left out. Emily Rose gives MYR, where Emily alone gives MLY. Write them as in your passport, in the same order.
Accents and special letters
Accents are dropped, except a few letters that become two: ä, ö and ü become AE, OE and UE, ß becomes SS, å AA, æ AE and ø OE. The Agenzia's own example: Müller is written Mueller. It can change the code: Weiß gives WSS, not WSE. For a name in another alphabet, the Latin spelling in your passport is the one that counts.
What is the code of your country of birth?
For a birth outside Italy, the four characters of the place are Z and three digits, one code per country, whatever the city. A few of them:
| Country of birth | Code |
|---|---|
| United States | Z404 |
| United Kingdom | Z114 |
| Brazil | Z602 |
| India | Z222 |
| China | Z210 |
| Ukraine | Z138 |
| Russia | Z154 |
| Germany | Z112 |
| France | Z110 |

Born in a country that no longer exists
The Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia keep their codes (Z135, Z118, Z105), and so do today's countries. No published rule says which one the Agenzia uses for someone born there: its director told Parliament in 2016 that this was never settled, and real codes exist with both. Enter the country as printed in your passport; the calculator shows the old country's version, and you can choose today's country to see the other.
Why your official code can differ: omocodia
When two people's details give the same 15 characters, the Agenzia delle Entrate gives each of them a new code: it turns digits into letters, starting from the right (0 becomes L, 1 becomes M… 9 becomes V), and works out a new check letter. This is called omocodia.
It is rare, about 35,800 cases among over 94 million people in 2016, but more frequent for people born abroad: everyone born in the same country shares the same place code. Only the Agenzia knows who holds which code, so no calculator can tell whether yours is affected.
Can you use a calculated codice fiscale?
No. The Agenzia delle Entrate is clear: “l'unico codice fiscale valido è quello rilasciato dall'Agenzia delle Entrate”, the only valid code is the one it issues, and codes calculated on websites “non hanno alcun valore”, have no value. A bank, a notary or an employer needs the one attributed to you.
How to check a code
The Agenzia has no calculator. Its free Verifica codice fiscale service tells whether a code exists and matches a person's details. A code you worked out yourself won't pass until it has been attributed to you.

How to get your codice fiscale as a foreigner
With a residence permit
If you apply for a permesso di soggiorno, the Questura or the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione gives you the code: you don't need to go to the Agenzia.
At the Italian consulate where you live
Consulates attribute codes to residents of their district, often only for some needs, such as an online procedure. It takes about 5 working days in London and about 30 days in Paris. Several consulates say the code is free there.
At an Agenzia delle Entrate office
With form AA4/8 and your passport (with its visa, if you need one), by appointment at any office, or by PEC, Italian certified email.
Through someone you authorise
The form allows a delegate, and Italy's foreign ministry lists a special power of attorney as a way for foreigners abroad. That is how AnchorLess applies for you, from wherever you are.

What do you need a codice fiscale for?
The law lists the acts that must carry it. For a newcomer, the main ones:
- Opening a bank account.
- Registering a lease, and buying a home through a notary.
- Working: your employer's tax returns carry it.
- Electricity, gas, water and phone contracts.
- Registering a car.
- Enrolling in the health service and choosing a doctor.
What you receive
A certificate of attribution (certificato di attribuzione del codice fiscale). The tessera sanitaria, the health card that also shows the code, comes only once you are enrolled in the health service. The code never expires.
What this calculator doesn't do
- It doesn't list the comuni: it is for people born abroad.
- It can't know about omocodia, or which code the Agenzia uses for a country that no longer exists.
- It doesn't attribute a code, and it is not an official service: only the Italian authorities (the Agenzia delle Entrate, a Questura or a consulate) attribute codes.
