Honorary Consulate of Portugal in La Paz

An Honorary Consul can be a Portuguese or a non-Portuguese, who is neither a diplomat nor resides in the country or place where his Consulate works. They are appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advocate and protect Portuguese State's rights and interests in a city without official representation. While Honorary Consulates generally lack the competency to perform consular acts, they might be allowed to conduct voter registration, civil registration, notary acts, and issue travel documents in unique and justified circumstances. Their work is carried out within their competence, following the Head of the Mission to which they are affiliated.

This consular representation does not partner with VFS services and hence manages all visa applications independently. The whole process, from application collection to decision-making, is handled internally, offering complete control over the visa process, but may extend processing times due to the augmented workload.

The application usually goes through the Portuguese consulate of your home country if you are not from Bolivia. Most visas first grant temporary residence, which can lead to permanent residence after five years. Requirements and processing times change: check them before applying.
