Honorary Consulate: what does this post do?
An Honorary Consul, whether of Portuguese origin or not, is an appointed non-diplomat residing in the country and area of operation of his Consulate. Appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they are charged with the promotion and protection of the rights and interests of the Portuguese State and its citizens in places lacking an official representation. While not typically authorized to carry out consular acts, in certain exceptional and justified situations, they may be permitted to undertake voter registration operations, record civil registration and notary acts, and issue travel documents. Their responsibilities are carried out in compliance with the Head of the Mission to which they are assigned.
