LISBON - The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has announced a new online system to schedule visa extensions. This aims to streamline the renewal process for immigrants with expired visas - and expired visas only, for residence permits other rules are in place.
The new system, available on the AIMA website, requires applicants to upload digital copies of their passport and visa. Depending on the visa type, applicants may also need to submit up to three additional documents.
The online portal for renewals can be found here. This service is available to those holding work visas, digital nomad visas, student visas, and other types of Portuguese visas.
This announcement follows a government pledge in late June to accelerate the renewal of overdue immigration documents. AIMA's dedicated task force has been instructed to make this a priority.
The government aims to resolve all outstanding documentation issues by October 15th, according to António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency.
An estimated 370,000 immigrants in Portugal require updating their documentation. While the government has issued administrative extensions, many immigrants have experienced problems when dealing with authorities in other countries. This new system is intended to address those issues.
