What Is a Perfilhação Certificate in Portugal?

In Portuguese civil registration, perfilhação means the voluntary recognition of paternity. The father making the recognition is the perfilhante, while the recognized child is the perfilhado or perfilhada.

The certificate is officially called a certidão de perfilhação. It proves the facts recorded in that civil registry entry, which identifies the recognized child and the recognizing father. In English, it may also be described as a Portuguese paternity recognition certificate or acknowledgment of paternity certificate.

This is not a DNA test, a medical certificate, or an informal declaration. It is official proof of a legal act registered with the Portuguese civil registry.

Is Requesting the Certificate the Same as Recognizing Paternity?

No. This distinction is essential.

According to the Portuguese civil registry service, the register identifies:

The recognized child (perfilhado or perfilhada)

The official public page does not list every field that will appear in every issued certificate. If an authority asked for the document, confirm whether it accepts the electronic certificate or requires paper, translation, legalization, or an apostille.

Who Can Request a Perfilhação Certificate?

As a general rule, any person can request a Portuguese perfilhação certificate, including one concerning someone else. The important exception is a record protected by legal secrecy.

When is a perfilhação record secret?

The record remains secret while an adult or emancipated recognized child has not authorized the recognition. If the recognized child died before the recognition, the record remains secret until their adult or emancipated descendants consent.

The municipality (concelho) and parish (freguesia), when known

Sharing that code with a public or private organization during its validity period is equivalent in Portugal to providing the paper certificate. The code cannot be renewed; after it expires, a new request is required.

A screenshot or ordinary printout of the consultation page is not itself a substitute for the electronic certificate and valid access code.

Can You Request the Certificate from Abroad?

Yes. You do not need to live in Portugal or visit a Conservatória do Registo Civil to order an eligible, non-secret certificate online.

Check Portuguese spellings, accents, dates, and birthplaces carefully because mismatches can complicate the registry search. For use abroad, ask the receiving authority whether it accepts the digital code or requires paper, translation, legalization, or an apostille.
